The Location

Croydon Old Town is steeped in history. At one end is its market known as Surrey Street market which dates back to medieval times. Old Town is also the home of the popular Old Palace School for Girls, which was the Summer residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 500 years. At the other end of Old Town is the famous North End shopping high street. Old Town has seen itself emerge through the transformation of Croydon in the 1960s with its road and underpass engineering feats of the time and later with the arrival of the trams in the 1990s/early 2000s. It is a very cosmopolitan forward looking and international town with much vibrancy at its heart with new new impressive office buildings appearing everywhere you look. Within 5 minutes you can be at the newly refurbished Fairfield Halls and Ashcroft theatre, or within a choice of many different bars and restaurants, a Vue cinema, and many top brand shops, or simply enjoy the peacefulness of the Queen's Gardens next to the Old Town Hall and library opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1983. The Coombe Cliff gardens (7 mins walk) offer a wide open space for Summer picnics and relaxation. There was an estate at Coombe as far back as 1221, recorded as being held by Richard of Coombe. In Elizabethan times, it was known as Broad Coombe. The Trams (4 mins walk away) go all the way to Wimbledon via Purley Way's Ikea, Cinemas and out of town shopping superstores so there really is no need for a car.
